History
The
city was founded in 1542 by the Franciscan monk Fray Juan de San
Miguel, who baptized it originally as San Miguel el Grande (Saint
Michael the Great). It used to be an important stop for the Old Royal
Path and the silver route of Zacatecas.
San
Miguel de Allende is known as the “Forge of Independence” and the city
of origin of General Ignacio Allende, who was a key leader in the war
of Independence against Spain. While he was leaving the country in a
quest for weapons, he was captured, judged, sentenced and shot.
By
March 8, 1826, the town of San Miguel el Grande was elevated to city
status and changed its name to “San Miguel de Allende” in honor and
memory of General Allende.
San Miguel Today
The heart of Mexico, San Miguel de Allende, is an example for many Magical Towns in Mexico and cultural heritage for UNESCO (since July of 2008), is a place with cultural wealth and relaxed and safe environment that makes it one of the best places for retirement (Travel Leisure – August 2006, 2007 and 2008).
